Sciatica

Sciatica is a common and often debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down the back of each leg, becomes compressed and irritated. This compression can lead to sharp, shooting pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the lower back, buttocks, and legs, making everyday activities challenging and uncomfortable. Specific exercises and stretches are typically recommended to strengthen the muscles surrounding the spine to improve flexibility, further supporting long-term relief and prevention of future flare-ups.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica refers to the pain that originates from the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body. The most common symptom is pain that travels from the lower back through the buttocks and down one leg.

Patients with sciatica may also experience:

  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Weakness
  • Pins and needles sensations

The pain intensity can range from mild discomfort to sharp and debilitating. Sciatica usually affects just one side of the body.

What are the common causes of sciatica?

Sciatica is usually caused by the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. It’s a symptom of a greater problem, not a condition in itself.

One of the most common causes of sciatica is a herniated disc, where the soft center of a spinal disc pushes out and puts pressure on the nerve.

Another frequent cause is spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the nerve roots.

Other possible reasons for developing sciatica include degenerative disc disease, bone spurs, and muscle imbalances. In some cases, pregnancy, spinal injuries, or certain medical conditions can also lead to sciatica.

Identifying the specific cause of sciatica is essential for creating an effective treatment plan to alleviate symptoms and promote recovery.
